On last Monday, hundreds of admirers of the former Soviet leader lined up in Moscow’s Red Square to lay wreaths at his grave, in honor of the 130th anniversary of his birth.
Ivan Melnikov of Russia’s Communist Party, the deputy parliament speaker, wrote on his party’s website, “We would very much like for any discussion of the mistakes of the Stalin epoch to be silenced today, so that people can reflect on Stalin’s personality as a creator, a thinker and a patriot.”

MOSCOW (Reuters) – President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday ordered a one fifth cut to the staff of Interior Ministry after a series of scandals involving the police. The reform could affect at least 280,000 people and become one of the most ambitious reforms of Russia’s bloated bureaucracy since the fall of the Soviet Union. (more…)

The EU granted protection to 76,300 asylum seekers in 2008, according to statistics issued by the European Commission.
The largest group of beneficiaries of protection was Iraqis (16,600 people or 22 per cent of the total), followed by Somalis (9,500 or 12 per cent), Russians (7,400 or 10 per cent), Afghans (5,000 or seven per cent) and Eritreans (4,600 or six per cent). Nearly 30 per cent of asylum seekers were given a favorable decision the first time round.
Of the 76,300 people who were granted protection status, 40,000 were granted refugee status, 25,500 subsidiary protection and 10,800 were allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds. Two thirds of all grants of protection status were in France (11,500), followed by Germany (10,700), the UK (10,200), Italy (9,700), Sweden (8,700), the Netherlands (6,100) and Austria (5,700).

The same-sex couples will be able to formalise their relationships from 1 January 2010

The final vote was 64 against the bill, and 110 in favour, reports the Associated Press.
“We are living in the 21st century and I’m very glad this step is being taken today,” said Justice Minister Claudia Bandion-Ortner on Friday.
While the new bill will give gay couples access to legal rights like a pension if one partner dies, it also formally bans the adoption of children or artificial insemination for same-sex couples.
And unlike straight couples, gay couples will not be able to record their unions at the civil registry office, but with another authority instead.

Heesters sagte beim Eintreffen in den Steinsaal: “Ich freue mich sehr, im Wiener Rathaus zu sein.” “Jopie”, wie er von seinen Berliner Freunden auch genannt wird, feiert seinen 106 Geburtstag in Wien.
