Women with good genes have more sexual partners

GENES behind the immune system may explain why some women have more sexual partners than others.
The major histocompatibility complex is the most gene-dense region of the genome and plays an important role in our immune system. The more diverse the genes of this region are, the more effective this complex is at disease resistance and our overall survival. Some animals with diverse genome are more likely to survive and be chosen as a sexual partner.
Hanne Lie of the University of Western Australia measured the diversity of this complex in 74 heterosexual female students and asked them about the number of sexual partners they had had. She found that the greater a woman’s genome diversity was, the more sexual partners she had had.
