Upcoming elections in Kyrgyzstan

The Oct. 30 elections will decide who succeeds President Roza Otunbayeva, leader of an interim government since President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was forced to flee the capital in April 2010. The situation may become destabilized during and after these Collections. Kyrgyzstan has witnessed two revolutions since 2005, as well as ethnic violence that killed over 400 people and a change of constitution last year.

The authorities are eager for the Oct 30 presidential election to run as smoothly as possible to maintain stability in the fragile country.
The favorite to take the presidency is Almazbek Atambayev, a northerner and a key figure in the overthrow of Mr. Bakiyev. Mr. Atambayev served as prime minister in the interim government.
Some see the upcoming election as a chance for Kyrgyzstan to regain stability. Many see the biggest challenge facing a new president is the political divide between the north and south of the country
Kyrgyzstan’s television channels have temporarily scrapped programmes by international broadcasters to reduce outside interference in its presidential election month.
Monitors have accused Russian news channels of influencing past elections in Kyrgyzstan
Exerting influence over Kyrgyzstan is vital for gaining predominance over Central Asia which is rich in minerals and lies next to Russia, China and Afghanistan.
Both Russia and the United States operate a military air base in the country and China has boosted both financial support and business links with Kyrgyzstan this year.
