(more…)

WIEN- By Galina Toktalieva
Picture “Wilfried Seywald in Russland” by author
Here are a few thoughts about Russians in Vienna, and about national identification and feeling of dignity that for many of them was lost for ever. There is also something about Galina’s personal interview with Mr. Wilfried Seywald, chief of Austrian PR Agency “Temmel, Seywald und Partner”
О национальной гордости великороссов
Да будь я и негром преклонных годов,
и то без унынья и лени,
я русский бы выучил только за то,
что им разговаривал Ленин
В. Маяковский
Спросите, легко ли русскоязычным в венской эмиграции. (more…)

An Attempt to describe the Austrian Mentality
by Alexandra Umfahrer
Edited by Galina Toktalieva

I`m Austrian and I love my country. Nevertheless, some things go wrong and I want to criticize them by means of loving criticism.
To assign a general mentality to a nation can easily lead to prejudices and racism. Not all Austrians fit the characteristics imposed on them. Not all Germans are punctual and industrious, not all Italians are hot tempered. (more…)

Galina Toktalieva for die Wiener Nachrichten
Whenever I go to Main Square with idea to make good photo of a horse, the blinders – leather flaps of bridle to keep horse from seeing anything on both sides – abash me. They say horses need those blinders to drag carriage with tourists forward. They also say about folks who are not able to accept reality: people have their blinders on. However, to move steadily forward, one virtually needs to concentrate at target and ignore anything else around – to put blinders on. Photographers experimenting with image know that any occasional element included in frames suddenly gets quality of wholeness. Frames draw attention to detail retrieved from blurred zone of our perception. Can we really believe our eyes, if consider that eagles, cats or flies see the world differently? (more…)

It was election campaign event in Vienna Stadthalle, which attracted thousands of people who expressed their support for social democrats prime candidate Werner Faymann.
I talked to a few ordinary persons who enjoyed themselves in buffet of concert hall during the speech of Werner Faymann looking at the screen of big monitor with his face, and all of them described Faymann as nice lad, at the same time all of them aware of the fact that nobody must take election promises of social democrats at earnest. My confidants also noticed that a lot of money was invested in this election campaign for rivers of beer, wine, sandwiches and souvenirs with expectations that Austrians would give their voices for those who once generously let them to become drunk.
All photographers were seized with mass psychosis of depicting and pursuing Werner Faymann. At the same time many others not less interesting figures of Austrian social democracy didn’t get sufficient attention they deserved.
Those who stay out of the circle of crowd’s blind admiration often look much more interesting without their usual protecting mask.
Personally for me, Gusenbauer presents more inner power, than Werner Faymann. Perhaps because he has much more experience.

Christoph Exler. Everybody has his own concept of love and art. And love is the only form of art where everybody
considers himself to be highly professional. I wrote these angry lines after personal talk with this painter in one of Vienna cafes. He impressed me as sarcastic person with obviously reduced respect to others mental systems, cultures and nationalities, than his own. This man whom I met by chance in Graben, introduced himself as well known Austrian painter, and with certain aplomb he invited me to drink a cup of cofree with him. There in Havelka he demonstrated me one of his drawings. It was very dark in cafe, and I could not make portrait of a man. He talked much and gave feeling of being sarcastic. In breaks between consumation of beer, he criticized all photographers for being stupid and especially me, though he had never seen what I was doing. I paid attention to small detail, that always signalizes for me about ways person has and his awareness, that though he invited me, I lost two hours listening to him and paid for my drink myself. He didn’t offer to pay for me.
