Russia comes through hardest winter, and weather, by any standard, is really cold. Across Moscow, locals run from A to B avoiding the huge phallic icicles which collapse now and then from the spouts of drainpipes. At the doors to the metro, babushkas in headscarves hunch against the bitter wind, begging for pennies. And just a few paces away, Russia’s super-rich are proving their impunity to these testing conditions.

Erstmals nach sechs Jahren ist die Zahl der Morde aus fremdenfeindlichen Motiven in Russland gesunken. Doch Neo-Nazi-Gruppen greifen jetzt auch Staatseinrichtungen an.

Im Jahre 2009 sind laut einer Untersuchung des Analysezentrums “Sowa” (Die Eule) in Russland 70 Menschen von nationalistischen und rechtsradikalen Tätern ermordet worden. 2008 lag die Zahl bei 109 Ermordeten. Gleichzeitig werde auf staatlicher Ebene das Problem ernst genommen, so die Vizesirektorin von Sowa, Galina Koschewnikowa, in Radio Swoboda. (more…)

A bronze statue of stray dog, paid for by donations, stands at the entrance of Mendeleyevskaya station. Dog made this station its own home, but one day was killed by one of psychotic passengers. It has become a symbol for the 35,000 stray dogs that roam Russia’s capital – about 84 dogs per square mile. You see them everywhere. They lie around in the courtyards of apartment complexes, wander near markets and kiosks, and sleep inside metro stations and pedestrian passageways. The Moscow-based Bureau on Human Rights says that Uzbeks and Kyrgyz were the ethnic minorities most attacked by radical nationalist groups in Russia in 2009.
The report says that some 218 attacks were made in Russia on members of minorities on the basis of “aggressive xenophobia.”

WIRTSCHAFTSWOCHE- Zehn Tage feiern die Russen den Jahreswechsel. Neujahr ist im Osten als Ersatz-Weihnachtsfest beliebt, Wladimir Putin verordnete seinen Landsleuten noch als Präsident im Jahr 2004 eine Woche Freizeit per Dekret. Das freut den Einzelhandel; Kneipen, Kinos und Kaufhäuser sind voll in dieser Zeit. Doch der Kater nach dem vorjährigen Konsumrausch fiel übel aus: Kaum hatte der Alltag begonnen, stürzte der Rubel ab, die Industrieproduktion krachte zusammen, es kam zu Entlassungen, Banken gingen bankrott. Nun neigt sich das Jahr dem Ende zu, in Moskau fürchten sich Geschäftsleute erneut vor dem nächsten Kater. Zu Recht? (more…)

MOSKAU -In Russland sind Nacktscanner seit 2005 im Einsatz. Viele Flugpassagiere wissen nicht, wie detailliert die Kontrolleure sie auf den Monitoren sehen. Und nicht nur die.
Nicht jeder Reisende am Moskauer Flughafen Domodedowo bemerkt sofort, dass der Schrank aus Plexiglas und Kunststoff, den er soeben betreten hat, ein sogenannter Nacktscanner ist. Die Sicherheitsbeamtin fordert deshalb mehrfach in resolutem Tonfall zur typischen Banküberfallgeste auf: “Hände hoch!” Steht der Fluggast korrekt, mit erhobenen Armen und den Füßen auf den Markierungen, surrt sekundenschnell ein Röntgengerät um seinen Körper. Es durchleuchtet jeden Passagier bis auf die Haut, um gefährliche Gegenstände zu entdecken, die einem gewöhnlichen Metalldetektor meist verborgen bleiben.

Few Moscow outlets have offered a more devastating judgment about the state of Russia at the end of 2009 than the editors of the mainstream newspaper “Gazeta,” who said in an lead article yesterday that “the main result of the last year and of the entire Putin decade is the recognition that no one is dealing with the affairs of the country”.
Instead, everyone is concentrating on their private affairs. Instead of worrying about how to ensure that the country is governed and developed, the powers are only interested in milking the country for all it is worth and then sending their children and money to the “hated” West rather than trying to develop Russia.
