Cognitive\/Intellectual Abilities<br \/>\nTend to have high average to genius intelligence.<br \/>\nSuperior long-term memory<br \/>\nWeaker short-term memory<br \/>\nOften have a rigid negative thinking, inflexible black or white thinking style or rigidity of thinking<\/p>\n<p>2. Career\/Work<br \/>\nOften drawn to the helping, artistic or animal professions, and often an \u201cexpert\u201d in her chosen field. I know of many Aspienwomen who are successful in the following careers: artists, actors, poets, writers, teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, special needs teachers\/consultants, horse trainers\/whisperers, doctors, scientists, accountants, authors, childcare workers, models, comedians, computer-related specialists, animal handlers, university professors, nurses, psychics\/mediums and photographers.<\/p>\n<p>May miss days of work due to social exhaustion<br \/>\nMay find great difficulty attending\/participating in staff meetings, lunch breaks, work social events<br \/>\nMay make up excuses for not attending work\/staff functions<br \/>\nMay have a history of being unable to cope with work\/employment environments, often moving from job to job, especially in younger adult years<br \/>\nHard-working conscientious worker<br \/>\nMay get stressed if have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time<br \/>\nMay become frustrated\/stressed if asked to do too many things at once<br \/>\nTries very hard to avoid making mistakes, forgetting things<br \/>\nTries hard to please others<br \/>\nMay burn bridges (walk out or quit jobs or relationships without notice)<\/p>\n<p>3. Friendships and relationships<br \/>\nPreference for one-on-one social interactions, single close friendships<br \/>\nNeed more time away from people than their peers (solitude)<br \/>\nMay experience stress, anxiety and confusion in social group or group work situations<br \/>\nStrong preference to engage in conversation related to their special interest<br \/>\nStrong dislike for social chit-chat, gossip, nonsense, lies or conversation that lacks a \u2018function\u2019 to it, but some are known to engage in it themselves<br \/>\nA history of being bullied, teased, left out and\/or not fitting in with same-age peers<br \/>\nAn intense dislike of lies, but may lie herself<br \/>\nHas an ability to socialize, however is unable to do so for long periods of time. Suffers from \u201csocial exhaustion\u201d or a \u201csocial hangover\u201d when socializing too much. The hangover can last hours to days, which can be debilitating<br \/>\nExperience great difficulty with conflict, arguments, being yelled at, fighting, war<br \/>\nHas great difficulty asserting herself, asking for help, setting boundaries<br \/>\nMay need to drink to be able to socialize<br \/>\nMay currently have or have experienced Post-Traumatic Stress, often due to being misunderstood, misdiagnosed, mistreated, and\/or mismedicated.<\/p>\n<p>Social Skills differences \u2013 is exceptionally good one-on-one and presenting to groups, however has difficulty working within group situations<br \/>\nMay find herself in social situations or relationships that she is unhappy with<\/p>\n<p>History of being taken advantage of by others<br \/>\nOften bored in social situations or parties or does not know how to act<br \/>\nMay say \u201cyes\u201d to social events, then later make up an excuse as to why she cannot attend<br \/>\nOften prefers to be engaged in her special interest, rather than socializing<br \/>\nMay be considered the \u201cblack sheep\u201d of the family<br \/>\nOthers consider her different, odd, eccentric or \u201cweird\u201d<br \/>\nMay feel like she has to act normal\u201d to please others<br \/>\nCopies, mimics, acts in order to fit in and make others like her<br \/>\nA people pleaser, but then may burn bridges suddenly (for e.g., quit relationships), as she has difficulty managing conflict<br \/>\nFemales appear to be better than males at masking the traits of autism in social situations.<br \/>\nMay be considered a \u201cloner\u201d OR may have many acquaintances, but no real friends<\/p>\n<p>Social naivity, may believe anything told to them by others (gossip, stories, jokes and teasing), difficulty interpreting the intentions of others, misinterprets other peoples intention, often jumping to conclusions about others<\/p>\n<p>4. Communication<br \/>\nDifficulties communicating her thoughts and feelings, in words, to others, especially if anxious, stressed or upset. Often can type or write her thoughts much better<br \/>\nMay dislike asking others for help, be unable to ask or not know how to ask for help<br \/>\nMay be passive, not know how to assert her boundaries in a healthy manner<br \/>\nMay offend others by saying what she is thinking<br \/>\nMay point out other people\u2019s mistakes<br \/>\nMay give too much detail and end up boring others unintentionally<br \/>\nMay ask embarrassing questions<br \/>\nUnusual voice (flat, monotone, high-pitched, child-like)<br \/>\nTendency to take things literally, missing what people are trying to say<br \/>\nMay talk too loudly or too softly, often unaware that she is doing so<br \/>\nOften surprised when people tell her she has been rude or inappropriate<\/p>\n<p>5. Physiology\/Neurology<br \/>\nA. Highly Sensitive<br \/>\nHighly sensitivity, may not be able to listen to or watch the news, listen to the radio, read the newspaper, watch violent movies, see hurt or injured animals, abuse, war, trauma, are sensitive to the emotions and \u201cemotional atmosphere\u201d of the environment, experience referred emotion and psychic \u201c6th sense\u201d abilities, may have strong intuitive or psychic abilities<\/p>\n<p>B. Sensory Processing Condition<br \/>\nMay have sensory sensitivities in the following areas: hearing, vision, taste, touch, smell, balance, movement, intuition<br \/>\nMay be very sensitive to pain or have a high pain threshold<br \/>\nMay be clumsy or un-coordinated<\/p>\n<p>May dislike loud noises and\/or be overwhelmed or stressed by bright lights, strong smells, coarse textures\/clothing, sirens close by or people too close behind her.<br \/>\nMay find children hard to cope with due to crying, screaming or other loud noises<br \/>\nSensitive to the way clothes feel and how they may be more important than how they look<br \/>\nMay have to withdraw, isolate herself when overwhelmed by her senses<br \/>\nMay not be able to tolerate sounds, sights, smells, textures, movement that she dislikes<br \/>\nMay not like to be hugged, cuddled or held.<br \/>\nIn social situations, the nervous system tends to be overwhelmed easily, leading to withdrawal<\/p>\n<p>She may notice and enjoy delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, works of art, and pieces of music.<br \/>\nC. Anxiety, stress or anger. Recent brain scanning research points towards enlarged Amygdala\u2019s role in intense emotions, anxiety and anger<br \/>\nD. May have auditory processing issues<br \/>\nF. May grind teeth or have lockjaw (anxiety)<br \/>\nG. May have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or traits<br \/>\nH. May have one or more of the 7 types of ADHD<br \/>\nI. Usually has executive function difficulties (i.e., time management, planning ahead, organization)<br \/>\nJ. May rock, leg-bounce, fidget or other movements with hands, twirl hair, stroke soft fabric to self-soothe (aka stimming or self-soothing)<br \/>\nK. May be very sensitive to medications, caffeine or alcohol<br \/>\nL. May have gluten, wheat, casein or other food allergies\/intolerances, gut issues<br \/>\nM. May have sleep difficulties, a preference for staying up late at night, usually not a morning person, may be very creative at night<br \/>\nN. May have Dyspraxia<br \/>\nO. May have tics (for example, throat-clearing, coughing)<\/p>\n<p>6. Physical Appearance<br \/>\nUsually dresses differently from her peers, often eccentric.<br \/>\nMay try very hard to fit in appearance wise or may not care at all<br \/>\nMay have a special interest in fashion<br \/>\nMay not shower or upkeep hygiene at times, due to different priorities (usually being involved in special interests)<br \/>\nLooks younger than her years<br \/>\nHas an unusual voice; may be \u201cchild-like\u201d, monotone, loud or soft.<br \/>\nOften does certain things with hands (twirling hair or items, different movements) or legs (leg \u201cbouncing\u201d or rocking while standing)<\/p>\n<p>7. Lifestyle<br \/>\nBooks, computers, the Internet, animals, children, nature may be her best friends<br \/>\nShe loves quiet, solitude, peaceful surroundings<br \/>\nShe may be ultra-religious or not at all. Buddhism appears to be common<br \/>\nMay prefer to spend as much time as possible by herself, with animals or in nature<br \/>\nMay have a strong preference for routine and things being the same day after day<br \/>\nGets pleasure from being engaged in her chosen work and\/or special interests<br \/>\nShe may make it a high priority to arrange her life, events, work, and environment to avoid overwhelming, stressful or upsetting situations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Von Tania Marschall Tania Marshall is a psychologist, working with individuals having mental health difficulties, anxiety disorders, social phobia and depression.
