Maribor Through My Eyes
Join me on a spontaneous escape from Graz, Austria to Maribor, Slovenia — a city that reveals its true character only when you walk through it without tourist guides or prepared routes. My discovery of Maribor was shaped by contrasts: elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture standing next to crumbling, neglected buildings; vibrant new cafés and hotels rising beside residential houses with worn-out facades and aging infrastructure.
Maribor greeted me with wide, peaceful embankments along the Drava River and a warm, spontaneous local atmosphere, so different from the more reserved expressions in Graz. Yet behind this charm lies a city where modern comfort coexists with visible decay — places where living can be difficult despite Maribor’s rich history and undeniable beauty.
As I wandered through the old districts, I felt both the romantic pull of the past and the stark reality of timeworn buildings that no longer meet the pace of modern life. These contrasts — between old and new, preserved and forgotten, lively and quiet — shape Maribor’s unique identity.
In this video, I share my raw, personal impressions of Maribor: its atmosphere, its language, its people, and the powerful contrasts that define life in this Slovenian city just 50 minutes from Graz.
